Please come along to the next AIR Open dialogue – a chance to hear about artists’ experiences and approaches, to share ideas and network with other artists in AIR.

Presenters include 2008 fine art graduate Paul Hirst, who kept a blog on Degrees Unedited (Derby | Blogs | Degrees unedited | a-n) (for which he won a prize), and Banks Mill Studios associate Christine Rozynska (www.banksmill.org.uk). Both artists will share their thoughts about points of departure and reflection within their practice. These short presentations will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Mark Gubb (www.smarkgubb.com) enabling all artists to air views, concerns and issues around their practice.

Failed Experiment

A couple of articles were posted simultaneously a short while ago - (below) - one about 'Young Artists' and one about 'Big Brother', with the intention of seeing which would be more likely to attract comments. If it was a competition then 'Big Brother' won with 8 posts, to 'Young Artists' 1 post. Although, now having done this, I'm not exactly sure what the intention was... could anyone enlighten me?

BIOSCAPE – Be Still, Be Safe, Believe ……..

Free Physical Theatre Performance at Derby University - Auditorium 4 on Thursday 3rd July 2008 @ 6 pm

Bioscape is an autobiographical landscape. I am keen to follow this direction to create an environment that freezes a portion of my own personal and social history.

We all have a past that is often sub-consciously transmitted into our work and sometimes only after completion do we reflect to realise this.

To compliment my final degree exhibition piece, I worked with Artsmith, a collaboration of local artists to develop this physical theatre performance. It presents the story behind my work, capturing the initial beginnings of my thoughts to make Bioscape a believable journey and complete the circle of progression.

The creation of Bioscape demonstrates my own personal journey, encompassing the capsule of time, change, cultural and social history, landscape, travel and self analysis.

The result is art that reacts within its own environment.

Today, one of the frames on the 2nd floor corridor was stolen - simply lifted off the wall; and a whole set of about 20 'Craft' Magazines - put outside the staff office for everyone's reference - was also completely swiped. Not wanting this site to be overly negative but if you see anyone carrying a frame and a whole bunch of Mags, could you ask them to please return the items, so we can all share....

Natalie’s work is about being ‘displaced’ and the exploration of new surroundings, about the stranger observing their new environment and how we respond to the confusion of the unfamiliar.

This exhibition is a culmination of the work made during a 10-month residency derived from the theme ‘Sense of Place’ and inspired by the people and landscape of Derbyshire.

Look out for Natalie’s work on Derby’s Big Screen.

This Ronald Pope exhibition, curated by Dr Robert Burstow, is one of three exhibitions now showing in Derby, collectively entitled 'Ronald Pope: Modern Sculpture in the Public Eye'. The other exhibitions are at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery and the Derby Cathedral Centre.

On Thursday 31 July 2008, 1pm – 2pm - Free of charge - Sculptor Jayne Falconer will give a talk about Ronald Pope’s work at the Museum and Art Gallery.

Chris requested a word game... Well here's a 'word contest' of sorts. No doubt you've heard of 'Haiku', the traditional Japanese form of poetry. Poems written in this style must follow very strict rules, which roughly are: -

There has to be an exact total of 17 syllables in the poem
These must be broken into three lines of 5, 7, 5
There must be a reference to a season
The poem must have a sense of being in two parts, with a psychological break between the two; yet the two parts must connect. The break must be signified with a full stop, colon, semi-colon, dash etc at the end of either the first or second line.

There you have it...simple! Let's see what you can do. I'm not going to promise a pencil for the best entry, but you will have my profound blessing. To get you started I've made a little attempt of my own - (and apologies if I've got some of the 'rules' or info about Haiku incorrect)

Phew, the results are back from the directed study module.

Within these hallowed e walls, I would like to place a question on the e table for discussion. Without pausing for a visit to the pub to get up the courage, here we go...

"Is the directed study module more about the experimentation over four months, in that post modern way, rather than the piece of work finally displayed?" (ie displayed work based on four months continual experimentation will be looked at more favourably than work that has seemingly been a short term response to an issue or subject or idea)

I have to ask, as frankly I am very confused and finding difficult to actually get any answers or directive suggestions.

Someone reckoned a few days ago that no-one looked at this site anymore....Not true! We've now set up 'Google Analytics' where we can look at the hits to the site, and it shows that in 7 days there have been over 200 hits. OK, not millions we know, but it's interesting to see where they're coming from: -

Derby has the most of course, but who would have thought: -
New York; North Carolina; Florida; Washington; Georgia, Oregon; Canada; Sweden; Australia; London (21 visits), as well as Glasgow, Birmingham, Watford, Milton Keynes, Buckingham, Berkhampsted, and so on out of a total of 32 towns and cities across the globe.

What's on - Millenium Gallery Sheffield - 'On the Map'

In 1935 Phyllis Pearsall (pictured) walked 3000 miles around London’s streets to design the London A-Z map. This remains one of the most ingenious examples of 20th Century mapping and one of the most common uses associated with the technique. On the Map examines through craft and design, the concept of mapping, exploring what a map is, what can be mapped and how it can be used and manipulated. It challenges the perceptions of the conventional notion of mapping and demonstrates the extent to which it can be stretched and utilised.

right *gets soapbox out of cubbord and stands on top*,

i am here to wave a big falg for one paticular type of independent media;
for a very long time, i have been a listener of internet radio,
it sustained me thorugh many boring essays,
and due to the amount of bands i discoverd from it, it is responsible for nearly doubling the amount of music i have.

net radio is not downloadable content (or 'podcast', but i hate that term, and i hate apple for setting a monopoly in peoples minds for certain pieces of technology inspite of the better quailty ones available form other companies, but i digress) it is live streaming of content.

i wont recomend any stations here, becuae the ones i have are very specific content that appeals to my tastes;
i would advise to go hunt for yourself, you know your own tastes and theres probably a net radio station out there fot you.

but i will put this down;

well, if not, WHY NOT! its the uni's own student run net radio station.

The 2nd years have done a fantastic job in preparing sheds 4 and 5 for their Exhibition, which opens on Monday (12th) evening - 6 p.m. - don't be late... And now, the 2nd floor studio is being cleared, with a number of you working really hard on this. Here we see Mr Phil Turner ensuring all Health and Safety regulations are strictly adhered to....
